Coming Events in Oriental and in and near Pamlico County

Chamber of Commerce Mtg - Jerry Schill - Mar 212017

The prospect of new limits on shrimping in NC’s rivers and sounds is the main topic when The Pamlico Chamber of Commerce meets Tuesday March 21, 2017 at 7p at Pamlico Community College’s Delamar Center. Guest speaker will be Jerry Schill, President of the NC Fisheries Association which represents commercial fishermen. They are opposed to the vote by the NC Marine Fisheries Commission in February to create new curbs on trawling. The multi-year rulemaking process could limit shrimp trawling to 3 days a week in the sounds, 4 days a week in ocean, during daylight hours only and towing no longer than 45 minutes at a time. More on the proposed changes here.

Conservation groups, such as the NC Wildlife Federation sought the new limits to, among other things, increase populations of croaker, spot and weakfish that can otherwisw be bycatch in trawling nets. Pamlico County’s Economic Development Director says the changes could adversely affect the county. The Chamber meeting is open to the public. PCC is on Hwy 306, Grantsboro.
