Floodplain Map Meeting - Jan 10 2017

2017The state of NC has updated Pamlico County’s floodplain maps, which insurance companies use in setting policy rates. Residents can view the flood hazard map online now at http://fris.nc.gov/fris/. (Click on map image at right to enlarge.)

On Tuesday, January 10, 2017 from 6-8p, at the Pamlico County Courthouse residents will have a chance to ask questions after state officials make a short presentation on, among other things, how the preliminary hazard data can affect flood insurance and floodplain management. Representatives from the NC Floodplain Mapping Program will also discuss the flood study process and how the new digital hazard data can be used to reduce future flood losses.

The new maps are said to be based on flood history up until 2010 (meaning Hurricane Isabel’s historic flooding in 2011 is not part of the calculations. Available digitally, preliminary flood hazard information can be layered on top of the county’s parcel data so property owners can better determine potential risks to their land. For assistance viewing the flood hazard data contact the Pamlico County Building Inspections Department at 252-745-3861 or the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program (NCFMP) at 919-825-2339. The January 10 event is scheduled to take place in the Commissioners’ Room, upstairs at the Courthouse in Bayboro.
