Coming Events in Oriental and in and near Pamlico County

  • In Oriental on September 5, 1917 a school bus brought students to school – a first in NC. The 30 passenger truck used by the former Oriental Consolidated School District was not saved (photo at right) but a historic plaque commemorates it.

The 100-year anniversary of the first use of motorized school transportation in North Carolina is this Tuesday. A 1931 Chevrolet bus from the Iredell-Statesville school district along with the state’s most up-to-date bus, a 2018 Thomas 72-passenger model will be on display. Education and transportation officials will gather in Oriental to kick off Gov. Roy Cooper’s designation of September as Safe-to-School Month.

Speakers at the event include Lisa Jackson, superintendent of Pamlico County Schools, Mark Ezzell, director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program, Pamlico County Sheriff Chris Davis, and Kevin Harrison, section chief of transportation services for the NC Department of Public Instruction.

It’s all at Oriental Town Hall, Tuesday, Sept. 5, 10a.
