  • Paddlers' Lighted Flotilla MOVED TO SAT DEC 9 2017

The newest tradition at Oriental’s Spirit of Christmas has been the flotilla of lighted kayaks, canoes, SUPs rowboats, that comes in to view in the harbor around5p/sunset. Spectators gather around the harbor to watch as this Friday evening event has helped kick off the holiday festival. UPDATE: But this year, a forecast of cold rain has pushed the Paddlers’ Lighted Flotilla to (a hopefully drier) Saturday.

You can be part of it – festoon your kayak, SUP, or other motorless boat with lights and join the nautical parade. Larry Summers, who is organizing the December 8 flotilla rescheduled to Saturday December 9, 2017 invites you.

“If you would like, please join us with your decorated paddled or rowed vessel. We will meet at the Oriental Wildlife Ramp at 4:30p for a 4:45p departure. (If you need to decorate at the ramp, please come earlier.) It is a xrelatively short paddle and we will stay within the Oriental Harbor. Sunset is around 5p. With luck and clear skies we might catch the sunset over Greens Creek. If you are launching from somewhere other than the Wildlife Ramp try to time it so you arrive in the harbor at about 5p.”
Once in the harbor, the paddlers parade back and forth near the folks who’ve come to the Town Docks and Hodges Street waterfront to watch the flotilla and the lighting of the Oriental Star (circa 5:30p) to the tune of some holiday songs. Questions? Contact Larry Summers at 252-675-0467.
