News From The Village Updated Almost Daily

Water is the common bond between “Buddy” (he’s the pet) and “Rawhide” (he’s the owner).
Rawhide & Buddy.William McDonnell Jones (that’s Rawhide) grew up here, but left at age 15. He worked shrimp boats on the East coast of Florida for eleven years, came back to Oriental for six months, off to New York for 23 years, met his bride Ms. Yvonne, talked her into coming back this way, and has spent the rest of his 58 years working local waters.
“Rawhide” stands tall at 6’4” with shoulders that look the same in width.
Buddy’s 5 inch legs mean that he is frequently looking up. This photo also captures an apendage of TownDock field correspondent Ray Everest.
But this is supposed to be about the dog….
Meet “Buddy.” Imagine a labrador retreiver with 5 inch legs. Buddy has had a few of life’s dilemmas in his three and a half years. First time he found himself in the wrong place on Highway 55 and spent two days in the ditch ‘til Rawhide and Yvonne found him and nursed him back. Next time he was smarter …waited until the truck passed by before chasing it …. Rawhide says the problem was he just didn’t see the trailer the truck was pulling. And again they nursed him back with one leg in a splint.
What is Buddy? Definately lab in him.
Whether going out on it in Rawhide’s boat ( where he continuously jumps into the water and has learned to traverse back up the motor into the boat ) or in any mud hole, Buddy likes water. Rawhide says that Buddy tends to prefer "any water that smells like the same shrimp that I pulled in a zillion years ago".
Buddy onboard the fishing boat. Rawhide says Buddy can enter the boat from the water unassisted….he swims up to the motor at rear, pulling himself up onto the motor…then into the boat.
That is when you’ll hear Rawhides strong deep voice saying “get away dog” and “now I mean it dog”.You may have met Buddy. He is often seen patiently waiting at the door of the Town & Country grocery store. Seems the employees will often slip him a dog biscuit. In return Buddy is willing to look cute, politely and patiently waiting outside the door.
Buddy really is a “man about town.” While in the morning you may spot him at the grocery, later the same day Buddy will be walking down Broad Street, or hanging out near the Town Dock.Buddy – Mister October.

Update – this note from March 3, 2004:
Some sad news today for Pet Of The Month followers – Buddy has passed away after a being hit by a car last night. If Buddy were a breed he would have been a “DAB” (Dachshund / Labrador) – he looked like a Labrador with 5 inch legs. Between his odd look and curious demeanor Buddy brought a lot of smiles as he wandered the village. He will wander no more.
A Buddy memorial poem was sent in by TownDock reader Cheryl Huff. Cheryl writes:
Eulogy For Buddy
Buddy
You were a study
Of odd proportions,
A real distortion
Of maybe Bassett – or was it Lab?
Didn’t matter – you were fab.
Spent your days outside Ruth’s store-
Never be there anymore.
Fell asleep beneath a truck
Of all the dirty, rotten luck…
Buddy
Your death is cruddy.
