& Misses November 2002 - The Ducks
Pet of
the Month for November is a departure from our previous months’
winners who were all canines. This time around the winning entry
has 10 legs.
They are Marsha and Dave Shirk’s ducks - Lucy, Huey, Louie,
Dewey and Daffy.
They bring a ring
of authenticity to the Oriental Duck Pond . Without them, it
would just be a name. The judges at TownDock.net also liked
that the ducks don’t let a little rain deter them from
whatever it is that ducks do all day on the pond.

Earlier
this year there were just two white ducks there. Lucy and Aflac.
Aflac had a bad foot which tended to make him swim in circles
on the one good one. He also required assistance in getting
in to and out of the water and Marsha would go out on daily
rescue missions in her kayak to release him from the suction
grip of the mud. Aflac has since gone to, as Dave puts it, that
Big Duck Pond in the Sky.

The judges at TownDock.net
were thinking of giving them the honor a few months ago, but
then word trickled in about duck behavior that we felt those
with more tender sensitivities would be offended by.
Now that mating season is over … it was thought that the
ducks’ positive attributes overall outweighed the overly
public display of affections seen earlier in the year.
Dave & Marsha
answer - why ducks:
Over the last
20 years there have been several duck families living here.
The last one was about 8 years ago. Those 4 or 5 ducks were
raised by Mary Ellen Ham. Over about a 3 month time frame -
a local dog managed to kill all of them. That dog is no longer
around - so we decided we would cary on the tradition of providing
the ducks.

ON THE DUCKS:
Lucy and Aflac born March 2001 - Aflac now living in that
big Duck Pond in the Sky. Huey, Louie, Dewey, and Daffy born
March 2002
Turn Ons: Duck love, High Water, and more Duck lovin'
in high water.
Turn Offs: Dogs, Low water, and no Duck lovin'.
Favorite Meal: Cracked corn, and whatever the
heck that stuff is on the bottom of the pond.
Last Book Read (or Chewed): "The Ugly
Duckling" (could not finish that one) and Ayn Rand's "The
Fountain Head" (Started out slow - but then just devoured
it!)
