October 14, 2015

T
his weekend is The Ol Front Porch Music Festival all day Saturday, AND The 1st Annual Oriental Rotary Car Show too. The Car Show is 10:30a – 4p: cars will by the waterfront near Lou Mac Park.

Here is a sneak peek at a few of the cars coming to the show.

NEW ENTRY kaiser truck
David Daniels likely has the biggest, baddest truck in Merritt NC. He’s bringing it to the car show Saturday to see if can claim the same honor in Otown. This is a 1970 Kaiser Motors 6-wheel drive Army dump truck – with a 900 cubic inch Cummins diesel engine. David says he didn’t buy it for the fuel mileage.
bel air
Danny & Gayle Queen from Cary are bringing their ’56 Chevy Bel Air “ragtop”. Car Show organizer Sam Myers says “true gear-heads of a certain age will appreciate the ’56 Dodge Lancer wheel covers. The ‘Lancers’ all the rage in the years before mag wheels became available and affordable.”
dodge dart
Mary Helen Boone’s 1969 Dodge Dart GT convertible is in the show. In this photo, she let some guy named Sam drive it into a New Bedford photo shoot while bringing it back from Boston last year.
challenger
This is a 2012 Challenger SRT coming to the Oriental show from Smithfield VA. Daniels Performance Group is a show sponsor.
chevy truck
Craig Baker from Minnesott Beach calls his ’46 Chevy pickup an “old school” hot rod.

buick century
Mary & Tom Stone of Oriental registered their recently acquired 1941 Buick Century sedan in the show. You’ll have to see the car’s unique hood release to believe it. Check out the back seat too – it’s bigger than your first apartment. (apologies for the fuzzy photo)
hemi
Riverside Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Ram is one of Oriental Car Show’s sponsors. They are bringing something with a Hemi in it. They were going to display a black-on-black super-charged Hemi 707 horsepower Dodge Challenger “Hellcat” at the show. But someone bought it. Rumor has it that the sale number had a seven and lots of zeros. Fortunately they have another white Hellcat in stock. If it doesn’t sell before Saturday, plan to see a 4-passenger coupe that can take you, your partner and two close friends plus all their luggage from 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds.
ford truck
Billy Creech’s 1951 Ford F1, with a flathead V8.
ford truck
Billy Creech has two old Ford trucks. This one is a 1952 F1, 6 cylinder, It’s finish has a certain “patina”. TownDock.net discovered Billy & Stanley this week rubbing off some of the rust (getting ready for the show).
ford truck gas tank
The gas tank is leaking on the 1952 Ford. Billy solved this with what is defined as “Smithfield Ingenuity” – an old boat gas tank was plumbed in – and then bungee-corded to the fender. We’re not sure if this feature will make it to the car show. TownDock Legal adds: Please don’t try this at home.
corvette
This vehicle provides some contrast with the above truck. John Mitchell, one of the car show’s organizers, recently went to New Jersey to drive this Corvette Z06 home to Florence. John is a member of the New Bern/Morehead City Vette Club and expects several of his fellow Vette fans to bring their cars to the Oriental show.

You can still register your car for the show – click here for the form.
