Post-Irene Photos From Thursday, September 1

S
cenes from Oriental on Thursday, September 1.

Hurricane tough. A tree crew removes the oak tree that downed a power pole on Freemason Street. Damage to the house was minor – a bit of bent tin and a crumpled soffit. Roland Pare says the roof has survived much worse. An unnamed storm in the 1930s blew if off. As of Wednesday evening, power had been restored to nearby homes.
Chips fly as Robbie Beal takes down a tree trunk on South Water Street. The sides of Oriental’s streets are filling with limbs, trunks and other vegetation destroyed by Hurricane Irene. The collection has started.
Marvin Lewis, Century Link’s repairman in Pamlico County makes a call in Oriental on Thursday. He says he has dozens of calls on his list, a list that gets longer as power is restored and phone service is restored, but needs service. He says he’s tackling them, “one at a time.” (Electricity was restored to his own home in Bayboro Thursday.)
Documents drying out at Oriental’s Town Hall where a few inches of water got in during Hurricane Irene. Town Hall has been drying out all week and the smell of wet carpets was still evident during the Town Board’s Agenda meeting on Thursday afternoon.
The day closed out with the Drummin’ Dragons at Lou Mac Park. The drumming circle meets there every Thursday (usually in larger numbers) and the session includes drumming and dancing as Wendy Osserman is, at left.
We’ve had an earthquake, and a hurricane, but no, the horizon has not shifted — at least not that much. Drumming’ Dragons drumming and dance circle, Thursday night at LouMac Park.
