Service Offered: Have Your Rig Tuned 252.617.3134

Reasons to have your sailboat rig tuned

Safety: Proper tension, mast alignment, and secure fittings reduce the risk of rig failure, dismastings, and sudden breakages in heavy conditions.

Performance: Correct rig geometry and tuning improve sail shape, pointing ability, speed, and balance, making the boat easier and faster to sail.

Reduced wear: Even load distribution and correct tension prevent premature wear of standing rigging, fittings, spreaders, and sails.

Handling and balance: A tuned rig minimizes weather helm or lee helm and keeps steering predictable across wind ranges..

Sail trim effectiveness: When the rig is set to the correct prebend and mast rake, sail controls (outhaul, cunningham, backstay, vang) work as intended, allowing finer adjustment.

Comfort: Less vibration, shuddering, and noise from a properly tensioned rig improves onboard comfort, especially in chop or when reaching.

Longevity of components: Proper adjustment and inspection during tuning catch corrosion, fatigue, or loose fittings early, extending component life.

Optimized for conditions/use: Tuning lets you set up for cruising stability or racing performance(different tensions and rake), matching your priorities.

Resale value: A well-documented, recently tuned rig reassures buyers and can increase resale appeal and value.

What Full Sailing Lessons Typically Teach

Full sailing lessons cover a comprehensive progression that takes you from complete beginner to confident sailor.
The exact curriculum varies by school, but most follow a structured path with clear milestones.

Core Skills & Knowledge Areas

Sailing fundamentals include boat terminology and parts, understanding how to harness wind, steering and basic maneuver
(tacking and jibing), and sail control and trim. These form the foundation you'll learn first.

Boat handling and seamanship teach you rigging and derigging (setting up and taking down the boat), knot tying, line management, docking and anchoring, and emergency procedures..

Navigation and weather cover reading wind conditions, understanding tides and currents, basic coastal navigation, collision avoidance, and interpreting weather patterns so you can sail safely.

Theory and technique progress from basics to advanced concepts—beginners learn points of sail (how different wind angles affect sailing), while intermediate sailors study aerodynamics, sail shape controls, and hull hydrodynamics to sail faster and more efficiently.

Safety and risk management are woven throughout, including wearing personal flotation devices, storm tactics, responding to emergencies, and understanding weather hazards.

Typical Progression Levels

Many sailing schools follow a 4-6 level structure:

Level 1 (Basics): Steering, basic sail control, vocabulary, and building confidence
Level 2: Tacking, jibing, docking, crew coordination, points of sail
Level 3: Sailing faster and more efficiently through aerodynamics and heel control
Level 4: Advanced techniques, spinnaker sailing, racing starts
Advanced/Offshore: Navigation theory, coastal cruising, extended passages

Each level typically involves classroom instruction to reinforce concepts learned on the water, plus hands-on practice and sometimes written or practical exams to assess competency.

Wanted: Wanted: Florida Bay Mud Hen Sailboat 17

Hi y'all,

I’m looking for a Florida Bay Mud Hen sailboat to purchase. I’m located in Hillsborough, North Carolina, but will travel just about anywhere for it.

Does anyone know of any for sale? Or someone who might be willing to pass a Mud Hen on to a new young lifetime owner? I love being on the water and maintenance alike, and would be a loving and appreciative owner. A careless motorboater totaled the Mud Hen my grandfather passed on to me this past Saturday, and I’d love to get back to sailing and leave this horrible accident in my wake.

Anyone know of similar builds? It’s a 17’ trailerable open (no cabin) gaff-rigged catboat, with a mast hinged in a tabernacle, retractable centerboard, tan bark sails and dark green or blue gelcoat (I'm partial to the green gelcoat). I really love this Mud Hen’s simple build and shallow draft. It was designed by Reuben Trane, who was inspired by sharpie workboats. If you know of similar builds to recommend, I’d love to hear of them. I am very gung-ho (pronounced gunkhole) for the Mud Hen, but I’ve never looked away from a boat picture.

ps - I do have a Mud Hen trailer. I would expect to buy it with a trailer, but that’ll mean I’ll have an extra eventually if anyone needs one!

Best, Haley
