That means relying on sextant, paper charts, dead reckoning and 40 years of experience, not a GPS screen, to find their way to the sub-Antarctic islands they have spent decades exploring and documenting. In this fascinating conversation, Thies shares the origins of Wanderer III (she was built for cruising icons Eric and Susan Hiscock), how traditional Polynesian navigators use stars, waves and birds to sail across hundreds of miles of open ocean and how a small boat keeps the world big.
