Recently Andy Polo, Bruce Goodman, Joe Gonella and Captain Eric Lind went on a small sailing trip. It was supposed to be a simple voyage – Oriental to Okracoke, then Okracoke to Cape Lookout, then back home.
Somehow it didn’t turn out that way. The trip to Okracoke was uneventful enough, but the trip departing Okracoke proved an unexpected adventure. The weather built up, and before they knew it the little 30’ sailboat was struggling with the seas. Most of the crew was doing worse than the boat – with Andy, Bruce and Joe seriously seasick from the motion. It got so bad that the safety of the crew came into question, and the Coast Guard was called. A rescue copter was sent… and the crew rescued from the sailing vessel. Eric Lind stayed onboard, and managed to bring the vessel home under its own power to its berth on Broad Creek. He had a tough few days at sea.
What did Andy look like being hauled up to the rescue helicopter? We think Laura has captured it well:
The three rescued crew members? They were helicoptered to Elizabeth City.
After recovering from their ordeal – they had to get home. Andy, Bruce and Joe got in a taxi.
For the record, taxi fare from Elizabeth City to Oriental is $320. Tip included.
