On Monday September 18 2017 from 3-5p, Oriental’s Planning Board will meet to go over and formally recommend changes to Oriental’s GMO (Growth Management Ordinance).

One focus of the Planning Board’s work at many meetings in recent months has been how industrial uses of property fit in Oriental. The advisory panel says it wanted to address concerns raised by residents this summer over Chris Fulcher’s now-withdrawn plans to put a trawler hauling and painting operation on the Oriental harbor. The environmental impact that operation could have had on other residents and visitors was a key complaint; Town officials saying their hands were tied also prompted the Planning Board review of the GMO.

At its Sept 18 meeting the Planning Board will go over its reworking, so far, of the GMO’s Table of Permitted Uses – the draft of which can be read here. Also likely to be discussed further are definitions regarding boatyards and marinas. The PB could vote to recommend that these be adopted by the Town Board which has tentatively scheduled a public hearing for early October on any changes to the GMO. The public may also comment at the Sept 18 meeting at Town Hall. ]
