2009 PAWS Pet Parade in Oriental
Parade escapes the rain
March 30, 2009

S
aturday’s PAWS Pet Parade fended off rain and had 114 registered dogs, among them dogs dressed as Sherlock Holmes, a cartoon hero, an airplane.

There were also dogs that did what dogs do. Take a nap. Sniff around. Get accidentally locked in a car. That’s what happened to Sadie, who was going to be in the parade but because of an errant door lock, had to patiently watch the entire parade pass her by. (A locksmith came to the rescue and Sadie got out just as the festivities were wrapping up.)

Belle, Grace Evans dog, among those at the start of the parade.
The Pet Parade helped to raise more than $1200 for the Pamlico Animal Welfare Society. Leading the parade was Ingrid Watts, a local girl who last year donated a year’s worth of her allowance to PAWS.

Mozart, the Best In Show.
Mozart owned by Gerald Walker, won Best in Class with a costume out of Sherlock Holmes. On the award stand, “Mozart“s deerstalker cap needed some adjustment. Skip Waters, meteorologist from Channel 12 and special guest did the honors.
Sadie Mae, Anna Barnes’ puppy, decided that the best place to take a nap was on the platform where the awards were being given out. She took Second Place in the puppy division and would’ve fallen back to sleep there if the traffic in other dogs hadn’t gotten so heavy.
Kathie Meyer and Taylor. Though technically a photo negative image of the other, the team took the prize for “Most Look Alike.”

And now, a word from our sponsor….. PAWS volunteers Patricia Cowell and Joanna Smith with the message of the day. (So far this year, PAWS has assisted with the spaying or neutering of 46 animals in the area.)
Before the parade, a gathering of small dogs and their owners.
Talking with the judges was permitted before the parade. Here, Kathy Kellam and Rufus meet with Skip Waters. Also judging the parade were Celia Waterman, Clare Pedersen, Samantha Winfrey and Brittney Flowers..

Some of the judges: Muffin Schmidt —in powdered wig — had the task of being the judge who could be bribed as part of the fundraiser. With her were two of the 5 judges, Samantha Winfrey and Brittney Flowers.
Roger Schmidt toted his entry in a boat bag. (He said he didn’t try to bribe the judge.)
Barquely, owned by Libby Ferdinandsen, was done up as both an ace pilot and an airplane. He won the Most Unusual category.
“CC” and Bev Seymour. “CC” was voted The One The Judges Fell In Love With.
Maverick Smith and his dog, Nacho won for “Junior Handler”. Nacho, one of the Town Dogs, drew praise from the judges for good behavior while on a leash. At award time though, Nacho was little slow about coming forward for his prize.
