After the Snow Fall
Before the Snow Melt: Sunday Photos
January 24, 2011

S
unday morning arrived crisp and cold. The clear air allowed Oriental to see the effects of Saturday’s snow fall which covered the village and surrounding area with more than 6 inches of snow.
Kayak as ice breaker. A steady paddling motion brought kayaker Rick Scott toward Oriental’s Town Dock and wharf. He said he’d paddled over from Whittaker Creek.

It was so cold Sunday morning — a temperature of 12 degrees right after sunrise — that it seemed as though the snow would be like other visitors to town and stay a while. But that wasn’t to be.

All over town, tracks had made their mark on the snow. These were found just after sunrise next to the Oriental Yacht Club.

That thick crust of packed snow and ice on Hodges Street and many roads gave way to solar power as Sunday wore on. 43 degrees may not seem warm but it was enough to melt the ice and take away more of the snow than would have seemed possible when dawn broke on Sunday.

At the Lou Mac Pier Sunday morning. Quite a contrast to Saturday. During the snow storm, visibility was low.

There was time, though, to take some photos on Sunday morning and keep at least the images of Saturday’s snow.

The Hodges Street Ice Rink. Early Sunday, when temps were around 12 degrees, Hodges Street had a solid coating of compressed snow and ice. When the temperature rose above 40 in the afternoon, most of the snow and ice had melted away.
The beginning of the end for an icicle. This one, outside the seafood market, was shedding water. In background is the “Joe Cox” house on South Water Street.

Still more icicles. These are on the former Simpkins House on South Water Street. Behind the roof, a tree with mistletoe.
As Rick Scott kayaked toward the Town Dock, a sound like an outboard engine “put-putting” could be heard, which seemed odd as there were no other vessels moving on Oriental’s harbor. It turned out to be the rhythmic moves of the kayaker’s paddle churning thru the harbor’s icy surface.

Icicles weren’t the only things hanging from roofs. At the Cartwright House B&B, a ‘rug’ of snow was slipping off as the temperatures started to rise Sunday morning.

Whitened oleander. The snow-laden branches were lower than usual, making the STOP sign that much more visible at the corner of Factory and Hodges.

A boat on the hard reflects not only the snow but a description of Saturday’s snowfall. This was taken Sunday afternoon, after much of the snow had melted beneath the boat.

The morning after. As the pants would suggest, Paul Fairbank knows from snow. The Chicago native and Oriental Parade Meister wears another hat Sunday morning: Snow Sweeper at The Boonedocks. (Photo: Jane Tindall)
