Dragon Boat Race Preview
The Teams' Friday Night Practice
August 21, 2010

I
n the run-up to Saturday’s Dragon Boat Race, the teams had a first chance to get acquainted with the boats. Late Friday afternoon, they slipped in to the 46 foot long shells, about 20 to a team, and for more than an hour, took instruction and got guidance about dragon boat racing.

Some photos of the practice runs:

Paddles up and in to the water. At the bow, the team’s drummer kept time for the paddlers.
The boats practiced between the Town Beach and Whittaker Creek.

Bailing was part of the teamwork.

Many a boat has plied the waters of Whittaker Creek. Friday evening, a dragon boat ventured there.
This team had Happy Wlliams at the bow. She used a drum to keep up the pace.
Water moved quickly past the bow.
A moment at rest in the glimmering light before sunset.
A dog paddler tries to make sense of it all.
And back home again.
