Ida's Aftermath Brings Rain and Flooding

ore than 4-1/2 inches of rain fell on Oriental in less than 48 hours, Wednesday and Thursday, as Tropical Storm Ida went out with a saunter.

Needed: one “No Wake Zone” sign for Hodges Street.

The rains came up from the south and the Gulf of Mexico, and combined with winds from the north. Here in town, that gave rise to the phenomenon of wind tide: along Oriental’s shoreline, the north winds pushed the Neuse and Pamlico Sound a couple of feet higher than normal.

Both sides now. Water on both sides of the railing on Hodges Street.

By mid-morning Thursdsy, the wind tide had flooded the rain-soaked low-lying parts of town, especially near the Town Dock on Hodges Street and Main Street near the Duck Pond.

Mind the wake.
