Every dog has his or her day and about 80 of them took part in the PAWS Pet Parade on Saturday April 2.
Two of Oriental’s smaller dragons, Sammi and Sophie won for Best In Show.Judges this year awarded the Best in Show prize to two small dogs dressed as dragons. Sammi and Sophie were accompanied by Ben Reese who donned a Dragon Trainer cape for the occasion.
In the impromptu award category, Grover scored as Loudest, or as his owner Mary Maxwell put it, Most Enthusiastic. Grover’s yelps from the back of the crowd competed with emcee Jeff Aydelette’s awards ceremony, and the decision was made to acknowledge Grover. He was still barking as Skip Waters, meteorologist for Channel 12 bestowed the ribbon.Tutus were well represented among the winners. Volaré, a French Poodle, wore a lilac tutu and matching glasses to snare the Funniest award, while CC, a retriever, got the Cutest award for her fetching pink dance outfit.
Not so tiny dancer. CC greets her owner Bev Seymour in the winners’ circle after winning as Cutest Dog.Last year’s Best in Show, Joyzee, a three-legged Pomeranian mix, won for Best Costume this year. A year ago, he came as a grand piano. This time around, he wore headband, lovebeads, sunglasses as Nancy Hiller held a sign reading, Rebel Without A Paw For Peace. Joyzee and Nancy’s other dog, Missy, dressed similarly, and shared the prize.

Police Dog. Skipper shows his style. Behind him is the trailer with the Pamlico Community Band.This year’s parade featured a K-9 unit. The town’s new policeman, Dwaine Moore and his yellow lab, Skipper, led the way. Skipper wore a blue policeman’s shirt, with handcuffs and walkie-talkie attached as he walked along Freemason, First, King and South, herding other dogs to stick to the route. For his efforts, Skipper won no award, but did get one of the hot dogs Roland Pare was selling, after the parade.
Policeman Dwaine Moore (and Skipper) directed the parade route down King Street .The yearly event raises funds for Pamlico Animal Welfare Society and its spay and neuter program. PAWS says that 85 dogs were registered for the parade.
