Moon Ring
Snow in six days?
February 16, 2008

The phone rang around 9:15 Friday night. Our neighbor, Sandie Beal, was saying we should look up at the moon. And sure enough, after getting up from the couch and out in to the yard, we were rewarded. There was the half moon, with a wide ring around it.

The sky looked as though someone had taken a foggy windshield and wiped a perfect circle of clarity, with the moon at its center.

Inside that ring, there were six stars visible to the naked eye. Sandie says that means snow in six days. We shall see. It was, in any event, a gorgeous phenomenon to take in.

The camera — and its button clicker — couldn’t do justice to the lustrous clarity of it all. The photos here are just atmospheric approximations. (They came from putting the camera on a bench in the garden and letting it soak up some long exposures — a half minute in some instances.)

We’ll be waiting on the snow….
