Holt’s Chapel is a Rosenwald School and the oldest African American School still in use (as a community center) in Pamlico County. Built as a Rosenwald School in 1921 by Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington, it was one of over 5,000 schools built by the project to educate African Americans in rural communities, when schools were still segregated. Of those 5,000 buildings, only an estimated 10-12% are still in existence.
