Right outside Oriental on Janiero Road stands a little-known chapter of history that is nearly 98 years old. What is now the Holt Chapel Community Center had been a Rosenwald school, one of 5,000 schools built for black students in the South between 1912-1932. How they came to be built is the story of a partnership of African-American communities with Jewish philanthropist (and Sears Roebuck executive) Julius Rosenwald and educator Booker T. Washington, who wanted to improve educational opportunities for blacks.
A special Rosenwald film screening was cancelled at the National Museum of Art due to the government shutdown. But don’t despair – on Saturday, February 9 @ 1p the film Rosenwald will show at Holt’s Chapel Community Center at 136 Janiero Road. Doors open at 12:15p. See this review of Rosenwald:
