Earlier this week Oriental enjoyed two nights of wonderful music by the Norwegian band Hayde Bluegrass Orchestra. The Old Theater was packed both nights. I was the designated emcee for the shows, so I got to thank sponsors and make the necessary announcements about cell phones and exits. We have all slept through those preliminary threads at shows for a long time. But something different happened during those announcements that was hopeful in this divisive time.

I began the thank yous by thanking the audience for supporting the Old Theater. I also encouraged them to continue supporting the other arts organizations in Oriental. When I added that the arts are important to our economy and to our cultural well-being, the audience cheered. When you pause for a moment and consider the audience, that’s a wonderful moment. In those seats in front of me were people I personally know were way left of center Democrats. There were also avowed MAGA voters. But, we were sharing that space and the company of each other in joy. We don’t hate each other. We certainly disagree about a lot, but we are friends and neighbors first.

I hope we can remember that when the town gathers on Thursday night to listen to the candidates for the five Oriental commission seats. Let’s treat each other with respect. No matter who is elected we will still be neighbors. Oriental is our home and these people are our friends. It’s not too late. We’re in this together.
