Florence Raises Water, Rearranges Town
Days 2 & 3: Fishing pier destroyed; boats, dragon unmooredSeptember 15, 2018
Hurricane Florence peaked at 9.6 ft, according to TownDock’s low-tech Stick-in-the-Basement. That stick has marks from Isabel (9 ft) and Irene (9 1/2 ft). Florence left her mark at 9.6 ft, one inch above Irene.Saturday morning, South Avenue. (Photo Pat & Laurie Stockwell)High-tech water level readings became unreliable as the storm went on; Florence destroyed the Lou Mac Park pier to which the US Geological Survey gauge was attached. As the pier went, so went that gauge. Water levels are still high, but receded to the 4-5 ft range as the storm slouched slowly toward New Bern.
