re-pandemic, NC State’s sailing team would visit Oriental once and sometimes twice a year.

Our town is the team’s Spring Break training grounds and also hosts their official, ICSA (Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association) recognized interconference regatta.

The last time Coach Dana Magiola and team were in town for an event was 2019; events in 2020 and 2021 were cancelled as travel moratoriums went into effect.

This April, NC State SailPack returns to Oriental.

Coach Dana writes in to ask for help housing sailors from 20 different teams – some from as far away as Texas, New York, and Pennsylvania.

We are getting things organized for our spring regatta in Oriental and I’d like to ask for your help to solicit housing volunteers for the teams coming to visit NC for this event. We are expecting to have 20 teams participating including teams from as far away as Pennsylvania, New York, and Texas. There has been so much interest in returning to Oriental and so many teams were disappointed to miss the past two years of this great regatta (and weekend hospitality!). Even with the 20 teams, we have more on the waitlist.

So with all of these sailors and coaches coming to town, we’re definitely going to need help with housing. The regatta is scheduled for April 23-24 so sailors and coaches will be in Oriental on Friday, April 22, and leave Sunday, April 23rd following the regatta (~4pm). Couches work great and open space for air mattresses is good as most sailors have air mattresses from normal college sailing regatta travel life.

I’d estimate each team will have 5-6 people. There will be larger groups but we can also split folks. If people have whole houses they’d offer, we can ensure whichever team stays there has an adult coach with them.

Also fun to note, we have had so much interest in coming back to Oriental that we have added a college sailing alumni regatta to the slate of sailing that weekend. We’ll be hosting this on that Friday, April 22nd and we have 8 college alumni teams currently registered.

Also, also we’re super pumped to be bringing 20 sailors down to Oriental for spring break in a few weeks! We’ll be on the water that whole week training and everyone is really excited to come back to Oriental, especially even before the spring regatta.
