Sad. Today is the last voyage for “Sara”, a 1980 C&C 40.
“Sara” is a highly successful racing boat that campaigned up and down the east coast. She was also a live-aboard home to one of her many owners.
She was built in 1980, in Toronto. Having spent most of her recent life at Pecan Grove, her last trip will be a short journey to SailCraft Services. Not in good enough condition to find a buyer, “Sara” is being scrapped.
SV Sara, resting at Pecan GroveIn a few short days, Triton Yachts will trailer the boat to her last stop at the landfill in Tuscarora. I will be the last voyager to step off the boat when I deliver her to SailCraft. At SailCraft the mast and rod rigging will be removed. Then, she will be hauled out of the water and placed on a Triton Yachts trailer for the short trip to the Triton Yard on Midyette Street.
“Sara” will spend a few hospice days at Triton getting disassembled. She is a donor boat.Knowing that “Sara” will donate a large number of her parts to other boats does provide some measure of comfort. Triton will salvage everything usable. The lead from her keel will be removed and sold to a metal merchant in Wilmington. Her low hour Yanmar engine is destined for a Hinckley Bermuda 40 being restored by Triton. Her newish VHF radio will surely end up in another boat. Winches will be scattered among a half dozen other boats.
Still, a bit sad to see a boat with so much history and potential euthanized. It seems economics and medical issues can send boats to their final resting place.
Perhaps just like all of us.
Fair winds,
Captain John Rahm
