A Space for Artists at Work
Oriental ArtWorks
February 9, 2021

A
gallery. An arts council. The Old Theater and a musical society. These organizations work to support and bring art into the community, staging events and creating space for exhibitions. The Red Rooster and the Brewery get in on the action, providing venues for live music. And the Ol’ Front Porch Music Festival brings touring talent to Oriental’s own two-day music event.

There is a lot of artistic talent in the area, varied in scope and medium. It’s what drew artist Carla J. Fisher to Oriental. And it is driving her to create a new opportunity for the area’s artists and residents.

Carla is a fiber artist, who recently moved to Oriental from Philadelphia. She was chosen as one of 14 artists-in-residence for the opening of Philadelphia’s Cherry Street Pier, a space where the public can watch and interact with artists at work. There are similar spaces in Alexandria, VA (the Torpedo Factory Art Center) and in Raleigh (Artspace).

Carla is working to create a similar concept in Oriental.

This is a juried artist space and an application is necessary. There is room for both full-time and part-time artists.

Fill out the application here.
