hey came; they tasted; they consumed … 60 gallons of chili prepared by 12 chefs. The 9th annual Chili Cookoff Saturday (on the grounds of the Oriental Marina Inn) raised funds to repair the roof at the Old Theater.

Neuse Sailing Association’s secret ingredient for creating a distinctive taste for their chili was smoked paprika, but Nelda Coats wants that to remain a secret.

Old Theater president Tom Cochran says 323 tickets were sold and that the event cleared $3,000 for the theater.

Over 300 people purchased tickets to sample chili, vote on the best recipe, and contribute to upkeep for the Old Theater.

When it’s really good, forget the spoon, drink from the cup.

The grand dog of David White, Oriental town commissioner, never considered using a spoon.

Though some recipes included a mild sweetness added to chili powders, baked goods were a la cart remedies for burning palates.

New to the competition this year, the Inn at Oriental declined to reveal the secret ingredient in their chili.
