Sailing School History
Young Bob Andrews in 1947
July 17, 2008

D
oes teaching youths to sail work? We thought so, but it is nice to have photographic proof.

Bob Andrews, 1947.
Oriental resident Bob Andrews is most often spotted today doing his work for the Oriental Tree Board and The Rotary Club (and occasionally seen cooking cornbread).

But in 1947 Bob was 14 years old – and taking sailing lessons. Bob learned to sail at the Riverton Yacht Club in Riverton NJ – his youth sailing classes started at age 11. Bob recently found some old photos from 1947 and agreed to share them with TownDock.net readers:

Bob, age 14, is in the cockpit of the 11’ Moth sailing dinghy. That’s Bob’s Dad (Gordon Andrews) in the white shirt. Bob today very much looks like his Dad – or in the words of Oriental Tree Board member Ken King – “the acorn didn’t fall far from the tree”.

The dinghy launched from the railway, Bob mans a paddle as he gets ready for the days sailing lessons.
As a result of sailing lessons at an early age Bob went on to enjoying the sport through much of his life. Bob says he owned several sailboats, but his favorite was a Compac 19.
