North Carolina's First School Bus
September 2017
Acentury ago the first school bus in North Carolina went to work – in Oriental. It was Sept 5, 1917.The 30 person bus was made by Corbett Motor Truck of Henderson, NC. That bus was not preserved, but today artist Laura Turgeon draws it back for us to see.
Readers with a close eye may notice an historical inaccuracy. Laura has chosen to show the bus underway as it should have been.Laura made the drawing from a photo preserved by the NC State Archives. Here is the original bus:
Laura Turgeon and her husband Gil Fontes live in Oriental. When they are not out looking at boats Laura and Gil are often seen with drawing instruments or paint brushes in hand. More of Laura's work can be found at her site LauraTurgeon.com. |
