Chinese/Lunar New Year Dragon Run - Feb 21Oriental celebrates the Chinese/Lunar New Year with a Dragon Run on Saturday, February 21.
The Chinese Dragon and team are bringing on the new year – 2026 is the “Year of the Fire Horse.” (We’ve been in the Year of the Snake.) The Dragon makes its run on Hodges Street by the harbor at 2:00p. Throughout the day local restaurants and the Piggly Wiggly will have Asian food specials.
Since unofficially adopting the Dragon as a symbol for the Town of Oriental in the 1960s the running of the Dragon has occurred on New Year’s Eve and on special occasions throughout the year. For the last fiftteen years there has also been a Dragon Run for the Chinese New Year.
Kids are welcome to march along with the Dragon. Bring pots and pans to make a little supportive noise along with the Drumming Dragons.
