September 23, 2019

T

In the past, the regatta was a big deal, drawing as many as 100 boats for the competition. It’s been more modest in recent years, but an effort by the Nautical Co-op, which is a cooperative between Oriental’s three sailing clubs (ODC, NSA & SCOO) have relaunched the event. As a cooperative of three organizations, they have more energy and human resources to deploy; over 300 members.

The Etchells – Oriental Express and Loon – took first and second in the Spinnaker Division.

This year’s race was tempered by Hurricane Dorian, which had occurred the week before, eighteen vessels put their sails back on and registered for Saturday’s race in three divisions: Spinnaker, Jam, and Cruising. But the enthusiasm for the event was obvious when it came to Saturday night’s Low Country Boil. Over 120 registered for dinner and awards.

And this year, there was an actual cup. It’s in the name, after all. Next year, an even more impressive cup is anticipated.
