Art on the Neuse 2008
33 artists, hundreds of art admirers
June 17, 2008

S
everal hundred people — a larger crowd than expected – turned out Saturday for the fourth annual Art on the Neuse show on the grounds of the Oriental Marina. Featured were the work of 33 artists.

In the middle of the day, you could take in a lot of sunsets, thanks to John Knox.
Unlike past years, not all of artists were from Pamlico County. Organizer Susan Cheatham says that the show also drew artists from New Bern, Wrightsville Beach, Pollocksville, and Greenville. (Several fine art students from ECU took part.) Two artists — Julie Gaines and John Knox — live aboard boats just off the terra firma of Pamlico County.

Fish-head? It wasn’t planned, but lined up this way behind Marlene Miller’s fish painting.

The show featured paintings, brilliant glass, intricate pottery, finely turned wood, photography, jewelry and cloth work.

Also new this year, five benefactors viewed the art and awarded checks of $100 to several artists. Among the recipients were Jenny Boudreault, Susan Cheatham, Julie Gaines and John Hanley, all painters.

The benefactors remain anonymous.

Susan Cheatham, who organized the event along with Toni Leavitt, says there was a steady crowd from opening at 9 through the mid-afternoon. Artists reported good sales, an important factor in a flat economy. Cheatham thanked the Oriental Marina for letting the event spread out over its lawn.

But enough words. Given the visual nature of the show, here’s a photo essay of some of the work and artists:

The air was almost like that in the kiln at Bay River Pottery. Candace Young said it was hot, but a good day nonetheless.
Life, art. Art, life. A painting by Susan Cheatham. Through the lattice work, other boats could be seen tied up in the harbor.
Manfred Rott’s woodwork.
This way to more art.

Rich Daniels (father of Oriental’s Sailing School’s Chris Daniels) brought an array of brightly colored glasswork.

On the day before Father’s Day, Rich Daniels and his grandson, Blake pose for a photo behind one of the bowls Rich brought to the show.
Under the hat is Molly Lu and her jewelry.
Silos near Chocowinity and part of a Tryon Palace painting by John Hanley. He said the sun shining on the oil would help them cure.
Jeff Troeltzsch and his painting of the boat and boat house near Stonewall.

Two ways to move a boat, as painted by Marlene Miller. (The foresail didn’t come down fast enough. A rare breeze knocked it over.)
Jenny Boudreault’s watercolor on varnished wood scenes of the county.
Enamels by Deb Iannitto.
Cliff Hill with his show-stopping door-stoppers.
A stylized Van Gogh by Julie Gaines.
Starry, starry days. Some art escaped the confines of the booths…

Organizer Susan Cheatham says Art On The Neuse will again return for 2009 at the Oriental Marina – the location has been well received by both artists and patrons.
