December 2010 Snow
Snow Visits The Day After Christmas
December 26, 2010

It started as rain, but as temperatures dropped the day after Christmas, by mid-morning Oriental was getting snow. About an inch has come down at this writing (1:30p Sunday).

We sometimes go years without snow, but this is the the second snow of 2010 (we got a few inches in February). Here are a few scenes around the snowy village.

More photos coming – we’ve sent out the photography staff with warm gloves.

4:30p Update And now that feeling has returned to the fingers, here are some photos from earlier this afternoon as the snow was tapering off. Even if we didn’t get much snow, it was enough to coat the ground and in the few blocks by the waterfront the snow helped to show their fine lines that we often lose sight of in the everyday scenes:

The docks at Garland Fulcher Seafood.
Plenty of seating at Hodges and South Water to watch the passing scene. There wasn’t much passing, but you could catch a snowcovered scene by early afternoon.
In the sculpture lot on South Water Street, one of Gary Gresko’s “Wave Forms” accumulates some snow.

Oriental’s harbor as seen from the Town Dock wharf.
Fish and snowy net outside Garland Fulcher Seafood Market.
Not a prime day for paddling. The canoe stays put under a palmetto.
Snow falling on cedars and fishing nets in a container on the edge of the Garland Fulcher Seafood plant’s lot.
At Blue Bottle Gardens, a Havahart trap gets some snow cover but is long past the time when it could trap anything but blue bottles.

The snowy scene in Oriental’s harbor as reflected in the window of the Oriental Yacht Club.
No worry of snow weight on this roof. Snow falls on Oriental’s harbor and in to the unfinished roof area of Point Pride Seafood.
There are spring lines, and then, as this piling shows, there are winter lines…..
Those seats still available at Hodges and South Water….
There wasn’t quite enough snow for a tall snowman at Lou Mac Park. The photographer calls this “Snow-Midyette”. (Benjamin Cox photo)

TownDock’s Senior Photographer found the Duck Pond Dragon stoically stiff on Monday.
Across Hodges Street Monday morning, the Town Dock appeared to have had visitors treading through the snow.
