New Bridge at Dawson Creek
Scheduled to begin Summer 2022
September 9, 2021

orth Carolina Department of Transportation is proposing the closure and reconstruction of the Dawson Creek Bridge, a two lane structure on Janeiro Road, in Arapahoe. Parts of the bridge are nearly 70 years old. NCDOT has deemed maintenance “no longer feasible.”

Construction of the new bridge would is scheduled to begin in summer 2022. The estimated total cost is $4,650,000.

During construction, the existing bridge will be closed. Pedestrians may be unable to reach nearby beach access points during that time. NCDOT says construction “will take approximately one year.”

The proposed detour route, from one side of the bridge to the other, is about 14 miles: Janiero Road to Buckland Road to N.C. 306 to Kershaw Road back to Janiero Road.

For those in Oriental, Dawson Creek Bridge is part of the route to the Minnesott Beach – Cherry Branch Ferry. Here’s the current route to the ferry:

It’s about a 14 minute (just over 11 miles) car ride from the center of the Oriental Village to the ferry. The proposed detour using Kershaw will add about 2.5 miles to the journey. Here is that route:

The new bridge appears to be of similar design and height as the existing one. Here is the elevation from the map (and the link to the design is below):
