April 7, 2025
Have you ever engaged someone in Oriental with casual conversation, only to find out that they were some kind of former scientist, astronaut, doctor, circumnavigator, or CEO of a large corporation? It constantly amazes me that walking among us are seemingly normal people that have had a very interesting life and career.
Sometimes our initial career choices take us on a circuitous life journey of adventure and end up being completely different and foreign from our initial dreams, expectations, and education. I suspect that at some point, these sleeper residents would jump at the chance to explain their exciting life to a willing audience.Well, I have just such a chance for you: The Oriental History Museum is joining with NC SciFest this month to celebrate and promote STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics), with the hopeful possibilities for our young people in Pamlico County who are presently contemplating career choices.
Our current exhibit is ‘Remarkable Women of Oriental’, with a STEM sidebar. We are inviting those residents and visitors so inclined to come visit our little museum; that is, when you get tired of looking around at the Oriental In-Water Boat Show. The Museum will open early at 10:00a, Saturday April 12, with walk-ins qualifying for a FREE cold, canned soda or water bottle.
From 1:00p – 4:00p, anyone with an urge to talk can get a 5 minute spot amongst the visitors to explain their former exciting life, with all its twists & turns, and how they finally ended up here in Oriental. We currently have speakers covering medicine, astronomy, civil engineering & surveying, and teaching general high school science. There is room for you…
Our hope is that there are some young people (and old) who would like to hear your story. We will have a projector with PowerPoint Capability in case you have pictures or slides, but no preparation is needed.
