Josh Kali, Path To Beaufort & Oriental | April 13, 2026

Josh Kali left Oriental Jan 28, 2025, bound for Antigua. That’s where the Mini Globe Round The World Race began February 23, 2025. Josh successfully completed his round the world voyage just a month ago, on March 10.
Now, he’s coming “home” to Oriental, onboard SV Skookum, a 19 ft boat Josh hand built himself.
Tuesday morning Josh is mid-Atlantic, about 665 nautical miles from Beaufort NC. We’ll be tracking Josh’s return voyage on TownDock. Guesstimate arival, April 20 Beaufort, April 22 Oriental. Actual arrival subject to the whims of the sea.
Sherrill Styron passes at age 83 | April 12, 2026
Sad news to share on a Sunday morning: Sherrill Styron has passed, age 83. A true village icon, Sherrill served his town in multiple roles. Styron is a past Oriental mayor and town commissioner, and the long time owner of Garland Fulcher Seafood on Oriental’s harbor.

Tornado Near Florence Has Power Out | March 12, 2026

A tornado touched down in Pamlico County near Florence Thursday afternoon. There was damage to homes, but Pamlico County Emergency Services says nobody was hurt. At 7:45p Thursday night, Tideland Power has thousands of locations without power. Friday morning, almost all power was restored. More info below…

Josh Kali completed the MiniGlobe round-the-world race Tuesday, finishing in Antigua (where the race started) just over a year ago. He sailed 24,000 miles on his 19 ft boat, Skookum.

Tuesday Feb 17 marks the 2026 Chinese New Year, celebrating the year of the Fire Horse. Artist Laura Turgeon marks the new year with this drawing. The year of the Fire Horse symbolizes energy, freedom, and rapid, forward momentum. In Oriental, celebrations for Chinese New Year include a Dragon Run on Hodges Street – it’s this Saturday Feb 21 at 2p.
